Hello Gorgeous!

Before you head out the door for work, to shop, or to grace the next social shindig with your presence, stop! Look in the mirror and say, "Hello Gorgeous!"

That's what Barbra Streisand said as Fanny Brice in a scene from 1968's "Funny Girl" while admiring herself and all of her Jewish uniqueness in the mirror. We will never know how many ladies of Jewish decent have been uplifted while watching Barbra's declaration in the mirror, but we can get a glimpse of the construction of Jewish identity and ideals by visiting the Jewish Museum of Maryland's new exhibit, "Hello Gorgeous! Fashion, Beauty and the Jewish American Ideal."

Debuting January 15 at noon, the exhibit's vintage clothes and accessories will help viewers examine the construction of Jewish identity and the impact of Jews on the fashion industry. This exhibition will feature vintage clothing and accessories, a tailor's pressing table, an electric permanent-wave machine for hair styling, a flapper-era dress, wigs and head scarves, an Orthodox-appropriate pink satin dress handmade for a Barbie doll, and a sculpted bust of Baltimore garment manufacturer Henry Sonneborn.

The regular cost to enter the exhibit is $8, while students pay $4. Parking is free until the exhibit ends on April 18. The Jewish Museum of Maryland is located at 15 Lloyd Street.
